Wynkyn de Worde's Papal Indulgence

  • Object description: This item is a printed sheet of an indulgence from the north of England by Wynkyn de Worde, the one that together with William Caxton introduced and popularised printing press products in Britain at the end of XV century.
  • Why we considered it: We chose this printed sheet in order to make clear the impact that the printing press revolution had on the catholic practise of giving indulgences in exchange for money. This item is coupled with another one in our collection, the printed 95 Luthero’s Thesis, and represents the impact of the Gutenberg invention on religious life of Europe and its role in ideas diffusion during the XVI and XVII century.
