The Printing Press

  • Object description: This press is a model made by IBM from Leonardo Da Vinci’s sketches of his idea for a modernized printing press, made for “Le Château du Clos Lucé - Parc Leonardo da Vinci”.
  • Why we considered it: When Leonardo Da Vinci was born (1452) the printing press already existed (Gutenberg 1450), but it was a heavy machine that needed several operators to be used. Leonardo thought of an alternative design to make it usable by only one person, and we considered this innovation to be a huge step for the printing revolution.
  • Standard used: Since the metadata standard used is not explicitly declared, we had to make an hypothesis. We found out that when an institution wants to submit some items (or an entire database) to the Arts & Culture Platform, they have to provide some specific and minimum metadata specifications following a schema that seems very similar to Dublin Core.
